I got me a new kitchen but it's been the biggest nightmare 10 days.
Day 1 - Old kitchen ripped out. Midday - telephone call. The builders have walked off the job because asbestos was suspected under the floor tiles. Asbestos workers arrive in the afternoon and condemn the flooring. Kitchen is sealed with warning stickers on the door.
Dat 2 - Asbestos clearers turn up and get rid of the asbestos and cover the floor in hardboard (not a great job)
Day 3 - Kitchen fitters fit the kitchen and put my washing machine and cooker in. No hot water
Weekend Day 4/Day 5 No hot water
Day 6 Cooker removed. Walls tiled Promised a boiler engineer would arrive. He didn't arrive. No hot water.
Day 7 Remaining non tiled walls and doors painted. No hot water. No cooker. Contact boiler engineer
Day 8 New flooring laid. No hot water. No cooker.
Day 9 All white goods (fridge etc) put back into kitchen. Boiler engineer calls - says that the sink and the entire unit plus the fitted work surface coming off the sink will have to be removed as there is some sort of blender filter for the hot tap that has been set wrongly. Removes bath panel looking for this filter and breaks bath panel. Cannot find the filter. Contacted kitchen fitters and they say its the boiler - boiler man says its the kitchen fitters. Contacted site supervisor and he arranges another boiler engineer to call tomorrow. No hot water. I installed the gas cooker myself.
Day 10 (today) I had a theory about the hot water and lack of it. I thought that perhaps the washing machine was something to do with the problem and that if we turned the hot tap leading to the washing machine off, it might solve the hot water problem. The engineer arrives and I tell him my theory. He does all his checks on the boiler (which is actually heating the water but just not delivering it to the taps). He says they have switched the hot pipe with the cold pipe when they installed the sink. I said lets try my theory and we pulled the washing machine out, switched off the hot tap inflow pipe. Guess what - HOT WATER!
This has been the most awful 10 days. Couldn't cook, couldn't bath, boiling kettles to wash, wash up and general cleaning.
I'm just glad its over.
Do you have a nightmare home story to tell?
