Urooj Khan, 46, of Chicago's West Rogers Park area won a million dollars on a Lottery Scratch ticket.
It was one of the happiest days of his life and decided to take the lump sum and after taxes cleared $450,000. He planned on investing the winnings in his dry cleaning business and donate to children's charities.
One day after receiving the check in the mail Urooj died on July 20, 2012 leaving behind his wife and daughter. No signs of trauma were found on Khan’s body during an external exam and an autopsy was not preformed because, at the time, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office didn’t generally perform them on those 45 and older unless the death was suspicious.
It was determined he died of a heart attack and the case was closed. Days after his death a undisclosed family member pleaded for a full investigation. The results of that test didn't come in until recently.
“She (the morgue worker) then reopened the case and did more expansive toxicology, including all the major drugs of use, all the common prescription drugs and also included I believe strychnine and cyanide in there just in case something came up,” Cina said. “And in fact cyanide came up in this case.”
“It’s pretty unusual,” said Cook County Medical Examiner Stephen Cina, commenting on the rarity of cyanide poisonings. “I’ve had one, maybe two cases out of 4,500 autopsies I’ve done.”
“The thing about it is that it’s not one of those poisons that’s tasteless,” Blum a poison expert said. “It has a really strong, bitter taste, so you would know you had swallowed something bad if you had swallowed cyanide. But if you had a high enough dose it wouldn’t matter, because ... a good lethal does will take you out in less than five minutes.”
New developments into the case discovered that the victim's father in-law owed the IRS $125,000 in back taxes.
So who do you think did it in this murder mystery? Was it the wife who cashed the check one month later after his death, the daughter or the father in-law. Or was it Colonel Mustard in the library?
This will be for sure a made for TV movie on Life Time.
